Apisit Kaewsanguan

Bangkok · B2B SaaS founder

I came in with a fairly developed idea and a lot of confidence about it. The session involved James asking questions that I thought I had answers to — turns out I didn't have answers to all of them. The summary afterwards was useful in a way I wasn't quite expecting: it reflected back what I'd said more clearly than I'd said it. I booked the setup engagement two weeks later.

The sounding session was good — honest, no fluff. I'd been going around in circles on pricing for months and the conversation helped me see why I was doing that. I did find one part of the session a bit uncomfortable because some of my assumptions got challenged fairly directly, but looking back that was probably the point. The note that came after was clear and short, which I appreciated.

I've been on the retainer for four months and the biggest thing I'd say is it's helped with the isolation piece more than anything. Running something early-stage can feel quite solitary, especially decisions that feel big but aren't big enough to bring to a co-founder or investor. Having a regular session where I can just think out loud with someone who doesn't have a stake in the outcome is genuinely useful.

I did the setup engagement while transitioning from employment to running my own practice. The three sessions were very practical — not much theory, mostly working through how to describe what I do, who I was going to approach first, and what I needed to put in place before I could operate properly. The priority plan at the end was honest about what was urgent versus what could wait. That was helpful.

Good experience. I did a single sounding session and didn't proceed to a longer engagement — mainly because the session helped me decide to slow down on the idea rather than accelerate it. That sounds like a failure but it wasn't — I would have spent a lot of money and time on something that had a significant flaw. The session paid for itself several times over in that sense.

I've tried other advisory relationships before and most of them involved a lot of the advisor talking and me writing things down. Driftwood Co works the other way round — you do most of the talking, they mostly ask. It takes some getting used to but the format produces better outcomes, at least for me. Now in month six of the retainer and the quality of thinking in our sessions is still solid.

Case Studies

A few founder journeys in more detail

Case Study 01 — B2B Services, Bangkok

The Situation

A founder with fifteen years of corporate HR experience wanted to start a B2B HR consulting practice. She had strong expertise but had never run her own business and wasn't sure how to position herself, how to price, or how to find her first clients.

What We Did

Three setup sessions across four weeks. Session one focused on defining the offering and who it was for. Session two worked through pricing and how to have the initial conversation with potential clients. Session three covered the minimal operating setup needed to start professionally.

What Changed

Within six weeks of completing the engagement she had signed her first two clients. She describes the setup outline as something she still refers back to when things feel unclear. The most useful part, in her words: "having a clear answer to 'what do you do?' for the first time."

"The sessions were more practical than I expected. I came in thinking it would be conceptual — it wasn't. We worked through real things and I left with a real plan."

— Pichaya M., Bangkok

Case Study 02 — EdTech, Bangkok

The Situation

A founder building an online learning platform for corporate teams in Thailand. The product was in beta and working, but six months in she was struggling with the decision of whether to focus on direct sales or partnerships with HR departments. Both felt plausible; neither had shown clear results.

What We Did

We worked through this in retainer sessions over two months. Rather than recommending one route, we mapped what each path actually required in time and resources, and what signals would tell her she was on the right track. The clarity came from thinking through the second-order consequences of each choice, not from the first-order arguments.

What Changed

She chose direct sales, ran a focused 90-day outreach effort, and converted four paying corporate clients in that period. She's now building on those to develop a case for the partnership route — but from a position of demonstrated results rather than theory.

"I'd been paralysed on this decision for months. What helped wasn't being told what to do — it was being asked the right questions until the answer became obvious."

— Natalie W., Bangkok

Case Study 03 — SaaS, Bangkok

The Situation

First-time founder, strong technical background, building a B2B SaaS product for logistics companies. Had a working MVP and two pilot users but wasn't sure how to think about pricing, or whether the MVP was ready to sell or still needed significant development.

What We Did

Started with a sounding session, then moved into the setup engagement. The sounding session surfaced that the readiness question was partly a confidence issue and partly a legitimate product gap. The setup work focused on separating those two things and building a plan around the genuine gap rather than the anxiety.

What Changed

Three months after the setup engagement he had moved from two pilot users to six paying customers at a price point he'd been previously reluctant to ask. The setup outline gave him a clear answer to the "are we ready?" question — the answer turned out to be mostly yes.

"The session made me realise I was using 'it needs more features' as a reason not to face the sales conversation. That was an uncomfortable realisation but a useful one."

— Apisit K., Bangkok
